We’re always on the look-out for men interested in joining Five Rivers Morris as dancers or musicians (ideally both!).
No previous experience of Morris dancing is necessary and we don’t have any sort of assessment or test before you’re allowed to join. We were all beginners once and we’ll help you learn the steps and figures that make up our dances at your own pace.
We realise that life sometimes gets in the way of the things we like to do in our spare time. That’s fine – this is a hobby, not a job. We usually know when we’re dancing out or have a weekend away well in advance, allowing you to plan around these if they are things you want to take part in. You can read more about the ethos of the team here.
Our practice sessions run from September through to April, so the best time for new dancers to join us is at the start of this period, allowing plenty of time to learn the dances ready for the following Summer. If you are interested in finding out more about us the best thing to do is come see us at one of our dance outs at pubs around Sheffield over Summer. This will give you a chance to see the dances for yourself and have a chat and get to know the team.
Alternatively, get in touch if you’d like to have an informal chat about joining, or even better if you’ve already made up your mind and want to let us know to expect you at our next practice session!
Practices are every Thursday, 8 – 9:30 at the Burton Street Foundation, 57 Burton St, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S6 2HH. There’s plenty of free parking and it’s very close to the New Barracks Tavern for post-practice refreshment!
Our members pay subscription fees of £60 per year (£30 unwaged) to cover things like practice venue hire, insurance (sticks can be dangerous!), new kit etc. As a new member you wouldn’t be expected to pay this straight away – only once you were sure you wanted to join the side properly and begin attending dance outs. Subs can be paid across several monthly instalments if required.
